In wake of survey, ‘it’s time to rewrite CMS policy,’ stakeholders say

PITTSBURGH – A recent survey that shows most stakeholders are not satisfied with the current wheelchair service delivery process is damning but necessary if the industry wants to drive change, Mark Schmeler and Brad Dicianno say.
The survey, conducted by the University of Pittsburgh, The Ohio State University and University of Michigan, found that only 18% of 1,052 respondents felt positively about the delivery process.

iNRRTS Awards 2025
On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, the International Registry of Rehab Technology Suppliers (iNRRTS) hosted a reception during the International Seating Symposium (ISS). One of the most important and enjoyable parts of this reception was the Awards Ceremony. Awards were given to seven (7) deserving contributors to the World of Complex Rehabilitation Technology (CRT). Mark Schmeler (pictured on the right) received the Distinguished Service Award for his distinguished service to safeguarding access to CRT and advancing the mission of iNRRTS.

University of Pittsburgh’s Rachel Hibbs Receives ASCIP Excellence Award
Rachel M. Hibbs, DPT, NCS, ATP, received the Excellence Award from the Therapy Leadership Council at the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (ASCIP) annual conference.The award is given to a member “who has demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership in the clinical application of SCI/D [spinal cord injuries and disorders],” according to ASCIP. Hibbs is the director of continuing education and an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. She is also co-director of the International Seating Symposium. In a social media post, Hibbs said, “Since my first ASCIP conference in 2015, it has been one of my favorite weeks every year. I was so honored to be recognized by Therapy Leadership Council with the Excellence Award and to present updates on a collaborative research project to progress evidence-based practice in seating and wheeled mobility.”
ASCIP’s conference took place in September 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.

RESNA 2024 Student Scientific Paper Competition Winners and Runners-Up Announced
Hanju Zhu, a doctoral student at the University of Pittsburgh’s Dept. of Rehabilitation Science and Technology, was a runner-up in the 2024 RESNA Student Scientific Paper competition for his DRRP paper entitled, “Distance Traveled by People Using Permobil Power Wheelchairs Based on Large Data Analytics”
